Swatch / Digital 80s Watches

Thanks to CT for the comment on the last post and reminding me about this!

The swatch, and 80s watches in general were brilliant. Todays watches are rubbish. The 80s ones were a fad that caught on around the playground pretty quick in the 80s.

There were basically two types of people. The digital watch people and those that had swatches. Both types of people would routinely wear 2, 3, sometime four or five watches at a time. Why? God only knows. But it seemed like the right thing to do back in 1985.

I personally loved the digital watches. First of all the calculator one came out by Casio. Brilliant. Then, you had the one with the A to Z keyboard and a slightly angled screen. This was my favorite, and it still looks futuristic today. I want one again! They were so cool.

In addition to the calculator and computer watches from Japan, you had the game watches. Well ahead of their time, you would usually have two buttons, and the only one I ever owned was a football game that I swapped with my mate Kevin for the computer watch. A very simplistic game where you could go left, right, or pressing both buttons you could shoot for goal. Yeaaaah!

Swatch Watches, as with punk rock, leg warmers from Flash Dance, charm necklaces, jelly bracelets up and down both arms, neon colors, Flat tops, the swatch watch was a relic of the 80s.

Quite why we all used to feel the need to wear 4 at a time I dont know. But I loved it. I am off to EBay to buy one and go Retro!

Thanks CT for reminding me about this craze… I’d totally forgotten!

His blog is a great read, check it out here

Good swatch website here too

I love the 80s. Anyone else got something they remember that they want to see here, just post a comment!

hahaha I loved the watches as well. I liked the grungy 70's ones with the red LED displays as well.

I must confess that I owned a couple of Whopper watches, if you met some bad people in a dark alley.. these watches could be used as deadly weapons.

If nothing else you could disable the would be assailent by dropping the watch on their foot!

25lb of digital magic hitting a delicate pinky toe will stop even the most dedicated robber!

I remember buying a watch in the late 80's, it cost a fortune, but it had all sorts of great features built into it, including an altimiter. I was so excited, cos I used to travel a lot.

The problem was, it used air pressure to determin the hight that you were at. So it was absoloutly useless in pressurised airplanes.

oh... the good ole days.....

OMG! This is a cool site man! I am soooo a product of the 80's! I love 80's flicks and 80's music! My favorite movie is 'Back to the Future' for crying out loud! Oh and 'The Breakfast Club' ruled!
Yeah, I had the jelly braclets and jelly shoes and a Casio watch or two! Wasn't brave enough to wear the leg warmers though. Although I had the Flashdance sweatshirt falling over the shoulder thing happening though, with the big hair!
The 80's were a kick ass time for me! Great Post! Mind if I link ya?

I'd like to read what you'd have to say about 80's jewelry. All those strips of lace and bangles and long earrings, etc. And not just the feminie stuff. :) Just an idea.

Brilliant idea Rana Kane!! I'll have a think - although jewellry was not something that i wore much of in the 80s - unless you count my karate kid headband!
One of my friends is supposed to be writing a guest post for me about girlie 80s jewellry, so watch this space!

Ah, the digital watches. Had many in my day. They were great. I had one that played a game and it had a big bulky screen that was much too big for my wrist. But the game was great.

I hate old watches, they are so basic, I prefer new ones where you can get better options, with futurist details. No matter their cost, the important things is how original they make you look.

It's easy to sort out all the watches you see online into those that you like the look of, and those that you don't. However, watches are precision instruments and have to stand up to quite a bit of abuse.
